Abstract

This study has established that a protected environment can result in a significantly higher frequency of complete remission and a significantly better survival when compared to treatment outside the protected environment. There is also suggestive data that the administration of systemic antibiotic prophylaxis is superior to prophylactic oral antibiotics. The evidence suggests that the effects of the PE and the antibiotics are independent. Hence, there is evidence that the combination of the protected environment with systemic antibiotics provides the best probability of response and the best overall survival.
