Abstract
Broca’s area in the human brain is involved in a host of motor functions, notably speech production. This article summarizes comparative studies on Broca’s area in monkeys and apes. The initial focus is on cellular and morphological studies of Broca’s area in monkeys and apes. Studies on asymmetry in Broca’s area are also presented and how they relate to behavioral asymmetries. The collective findings are discussed in the context of evolutionary theories of language and speech.
