N1 - Funding Information: The Latinos Contra el Cancer Community Networks Program Center (CNPC), based at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), School of Public Health, was one of 23 CNPCs funded by the National Cancer Institute’s Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities from 2010-2016. The CNPCs were charged with reducing cancer health disparities in racial/ethnic minority and medically underserved communities across the U.S. through a combination of research, outreach, and training, applied within a CBPR context ( Hebert, Braun, Meade, Bloom, & Kobetz, 2015 ). The Training Cores in particular sought to promote early career investigator capacity to use CBPR to address cancer-related disparities, with an emphasis on minority researchers and underserved populations. Funding Information: This research was supported by the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health through a Community Networks Program Center grant [ U54CA153505 ], MD Anderson's Cancer Center Support Grant [ P30 CA016672 ], and the American Cancer Society [ MRSG-13-145-01 ]. Funding Information: The Latinos Contra el Cancer Training Core was designed to facilitate trainees’ skills and experience in CBPR through structured and individually-tailored learning experiences. The Core was led by a team of four faculty from MDACC and UTHealth: two senior investigators (PM, SC) who oversaw their respective institutions’ NCI R25 cancer prevention research education programs served as co-directors, and two junior faculty (LB, LS) with recent training and experience in CBPR assisted as co-leaders. Community members from the Houston community advisory board (CAB) for the CNPC provided input into the Training Core structure, design, and activities. Information about the program was shared with prospective trainees via email list-serves, announcements at relevant research events (e.g., weekly seminars) and through the institutions’ postdoctoral training programs. The funding agency did not allow salary support for trainee participants and required training to focus on postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty. Early stage investigators from MDACC and UTHealth submitted their CV, an application form, and a brief statement of interest in cancer health disparities and CBPR. Those with completed applications were accepted on a rolling basis from 2011 until early 2015. Training Core activities concluded at the end of 2015. Trainees were allowed to participate in Core activities throughout the funded period, although financial support was prioritized for trainees within their first two years.
