Abstract
A computerized verification system to improve the safety and accuracy of radiotherapy treatments has been developed at Memorial Hospital. The system has been successful in preventing a number of errors in dosage, field size, wedge, blocking tray and energy. Two linear accelerators, a Mevatron-12 and a Therac-20, are connected to the system. Two more accelerators and a cobalt machine are being added. Standards have been developed for communicating between the therapy machines and a PDP-11/55 computer. Records of treatment are easily accessed by date or by patient. The first treatment is taken as a standard to be matched by subsequent treatments. Programs are now being developed for prior entry and analysis of the prescription, and for automatic checking of the dosage calculations.
