Creating an ERAS team and order set

The implementation of an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathway as a complex intervention will certainly present challenges. Multiple strategies will be required to support the changes needed at the provider, service, and organization levels to ensure its success and sustainability. Elements of knowledge translation, change, and project management and quality improvement will need to be incorporated. The creation of an effective ERAS team as well as standardized order sets are two primary recommendations. The ERAS team is tasked with methodically and thoughtfully translating the gynecologic/oncology or cesarean delivery guidelines’ recommendations into local practice in a measurable way with the goal of iterating towards increased guideline compliance. Standardized order sets can potentially improve clinician efficiency, the quality of care by enhancing compliance with clinical pathway, as well as patient safety by decreasing the potential for medical errors.
