Current concepts in bacterial meningitis

Many advances have been made since the early part of this century in the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial meningitis. The introduction of antibiotics led to a dramatic decrease in morbidity and mortality. Notable advances have not occurred, however, since the introduction of antibiotics; residual morbidity and mortality are still unacceptably high. New methods of therapy beyond the development of antibiotics are required.
