Definition and philosophy of integrative oncology

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter sets the stage for understanding integrative oncology (IO) by tracing its philosophical and historical roots, from ancient healing traditions to its emergence as a recognized medical specialty. IO represents a whole-person approach to cancer care that combines conventional treatments with evidence-based complementary therapies, addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. The chapter outlines the evolution of IO, the founding of the Society for Integrative Oncology, and the development of clinical guidelines in partnership with leading oncology organizations. It highlights the integration of IO into clinical settings, the importance of education and training for healthcare professionals, and the need for continued research to expand the evidence base. By embracing a comprehensive model of care, IO aims to improve quality of life, clinical outcomes, and empower individuals across the cancer care continuum.
