For 15 years, numerous randomized clinical trials have assessed the administration of high-dose chemotherapy in the treatment of breast cancer. Based on the results, high-dose chemotherapy cannot be recommended for metastatic or high-risk breast cancer patients outside clinical trials. The recent results of studies evaluating dose-dense adjuvant chemotherapy show that providing haematopoietic growth factor support makes this strategy safe and feasible. Dose-dense chemotherapy has modest impact on disease recurrence and overall survival, but these results suggest that dose-dense chemotherapy is an option in the adjuvant treatment of high-risk breast cancer patients. No prospective or comparative data is available for inflammatory breast cancer.
