Abstract
Regenerative medicine is an interdisciplinary field that aims to repair, replace, or regenerate cells, tissues, or organs that are lost or damaged because of disease, injury, or aging. Understanding the roles of microRNAs (miRNAs) in these biological processes is thus a novel therapeutic approach. Several drugs can alter basal levels of miRNAs in a tissue-dependent manner, causing some miRNAs to increase and others to nearly disappear. When miRNA levels are altered during treatment, their expression can determine whether or not a therapy is successful. Key interactions that link miRNAs in drug efficacy and toxicity are outlined in this chapter. By understanding the pharmacogenomic mechanisms involving miRNAs and drugs, researchers aim to elucidate potential clinical applications in regenerative medicine.
