Esophageal leiomyoma: A rare cause of false-positive FDG scans

Abstract

A 44-year-old nonsmoking man presented for evaluation of a positive PPD. Chest radiographs revealed a large mediastinal mass. Subsequent CT and MRI demonstrated a mediastinal mass extending from the region of the distal esophagus to the lesser curvature of the stomach. On the esophagogram, there was compression and displacement of the distal esophagus. PET/CT demonstrated increased FDG uptake suspicious for malignancy. EGD with endoscopic ultrasound and fine needle aspiration were performed and cytology was suspicious for spindle cell neoplasm. Pathologic evaluation of the surgical specimen was consistent with esophageal leiomyoma.
