Abstract
Palliative care interventions are aimed at reducing the physical and psychological suffering of patients and their families. The objective of this article is to review the experience of our research group with some interventions that are able to improve patient and families well-being expectations. Some clinical interventions are capable of creating expectations of improvement in the patient and family, similar to the placebo effect. These include telephone follow-up, physician sitting in during the medical visit, physical examination, the use of question prompt lists before medical consultations, providing an audio record of consultations, asking patients how they prefer to make their decisions, and improving the physical environment in patient care areas. More research is needed in this important area.
