Abstract

Approximately 58,000 people in the USA will be diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2011, and an estimated 13,000 people will die as a result of the disease [1]. Cancer of the kidney represents 3.9 % of all U.S. cancers and 2 % of all cancer deaths. During their lifetime, 1 in 70 men and women will be diagnosed with cancer of the kidney or renal pelvis [2]. Worldwide, the mortality from renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is estimated to exceed 100,000 per year [3].
