    Abstract

    To the Editor: The article by Arnstein et al. (N Engl J Med 285:1365–1366, 1971) once again points out the difficulty in the preoperative localization of hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands. We have used thermography in examining the patients with parathyroid disease. The normal thyroid and parathyroid glands are not visible on thermographic examination of the neck (Fig. 1) Abnormal parathyroid glands are represented by one or more areas of increased heat emission, and this is reflected on now commercially available sensitive thermographic units. The recognition of these abnormal heat signals can be further enhanced by the application of a cooling agent ….
