New treatment unit for MRI controlled HIFU therapy

Abstract

A universal therapy unit for high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy under magnetic resonance imaging control was developed and the tested in sheep mamma as human breast model. The computer-controlled system consists of an ultrasound applicator and a supply unit for radiofrequency signal conditioning, fluidic and driving hydraulics. A software is used for therapy planning including segmentation of the target region on MRI planning images and calculation of the therapy plan. Good feasibility was demonstrated. Ultrasound foci could be localized by MR thermometry and induced lesions were detected in conventional MRI sequences. Histologic workout showed coagulative necroses in the treated areas and fibrosis was present in the long-term.
