Abstract

Propofol is used for induction of anesthesia, maintenance of anesthesia, and treatment of refractory status epilepticus. Propofol has very rapid time to onset of unconsciousness (15-30 s) and is rapidly metabolized. Patients rapidly recover from sedation with fewer side effects, thus making it an anesthetic of choice for ambulatory surgery.
