Repair of Mucosal Defects: A Primer on Endoscopic Closure of Gastrointestinal Perforations

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Endoluminal surgery has certainly revolutionized the management of gastrointestinal cancer. Like surgical oncology for intra-abdominal cancer, endoscopic surgical oncology offers diagnosis, staging, and either curative or palliative treatment options for luminal gastrointestinal neoplasms. The fine line between complete resection of tumors or stopping short of it to avoid perforation with eventual recurrence of the lesion could be overcome by the ability to successfully close perforations if they were to occur. Currently, a number of devices are available for successful closure. However, literature on how to learn the art of closure is sparse. Here, I have made an attempt to provide a primer on endoscopic closure of gastrointestinal perforations based on my own learning, research, and extensive reading and repeated observation of other experts' work on this subject.
