Abstract
Syncope is a common occurrence and is seen in all age groups. Several well-defined causes have been described. The history and physical exam will frequently suggest the etiology. In the majority of patients, it is a benign condition. However, in certain subsets of patients, especially in those with organic heart disease, the morbidity and mortality may be significant. The challenge for the primary care physician is to identify those patients with potentially serious causes of syncope and develop an appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plan.
