Abstract

Three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound has introduced added value to pelvic sonography. It has allowed the display of coronal images not previously possible with 2D ultrasound, enhancing the accuracy of ultrasound in the diagnosis of uterine anomalies due to its capability of outlining both external uterine contour and endometrial abnormalities. The ability of 3D ultrasound ability to define endometrial pathology is superior to that of 2D ultrasound and complementary to that of saline infusion sonohysterography (SIS). The volumetric data it provides improve work flow efficiency and allow off-line data analysis. Consultation with referring clinicians and other specialists is made possible through storage of data sets that can be manipulated without the need for repeat studies.
