Abstract

The therapy of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in the adolescent and young adult patient presents several challenges. Clinicians who care for these patients need to be familiar with both pediatric and adult chemotherapy regimens for ALL. Based on experience in treating older adolescents, pediatric treatment regimens are being investigated in this age group, and early indications are that these regimens are feasible and effective. The role of radiation therapy and bone marrow transplant in this group of patients is being further defined. Owing to their unique position between pediatric and adult practices, these patients afford an opportunity for cooperation between adult and pediatric oncologists and for advancement of leukemia therapy in general.
