Abstract

The incidence of gastric cancer in the United States is decreasing; however, this disease still results in considerable mortality. Although effective surgical resection abiding by accepted oncologic principles allows for the highest probability of a cure, additional therapy in the form of neoadjuvant or adjuvant techniques may improve survival and quality of life. Well-designed prospective randomized trials are needed to determine whether the addition of new antineoplastic agents, the use of inhibitors of angiogenesis, or preoperative as opposed to postoperative therapy will further improve survival rates for this disease.
