Abstract

Standards for Basic Anesthetic Monitoring have been published by the American Society of Anesthesiologists and are eective since July 1, 2011 [1 2011 #74]. e rst standard is the presence of qualied anesthesia personnel. e next standard is continuous monitoring of the patient’s oxygen, ventilation, circulation, and temperature. e layout of this chapter will look at each monitoring mode before considering additional ancillary devices. Both standards are required for the practice of safe anesthesia. Appropriate monitoring of the patient allows the anesthesia personnel to anticipate and correct the patient’s deviation from normality with judicious intervention.
