Abstract

Fetal hamster cells were exposed to transforming doses of the polycyclic hydrocarbons, 7, 12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene, benzo[a]pyrene, 3-hydroxybenzo[o]pyrene, and benz[a]anthracene. On cytogenetic analysis, metaphases were found with abnormalities in chromosomal number and structure within 24-72 hours after treatment. These rapidly appearing chromosomal changes may be important in cell transformation by polycyclic hydrocarbons.—J Natl Cancer Inst.
