Abstract

Cannabis as a medication is not a new concept restricted to the modern era, but goes back thousands of years. Though use has been restricted in various countries secondary to concerns over perceived harms or addiction, interest in medical cannabis has remained strong, with even more support for those diagnosed with cancer. In particular, there is significant interest from those suffering from pain, insomnia, anxiety, or nausea. Oncologists are also reporting a significant percentage of patients who ask about medical cannabis, but surveys have indicated that most physicians feel insufficiently informed to make recommendations. This demonstrates the importance for continued research as well as a need for more cannabis education among healthcare professionals in order to adequately advise their patients.
