Abstract

The cavernous sinus contains essential neural and vascular structures that can be affected by neoplastic, infiltrative, infectious, and vascular lesions. These lesions may arise within the cavernous sinus or via direct extension from adjacent intracranial and extracranial structures. The diverse pathology of the cavernous sinus lesions can have similar clinical presentations, including headache, ophthalmoplegia (weakness or paralysis of the ocular muscles), exophthalmos, chemosis (swelling of the conjunctiva), trigeminal neuralgia, vision loss, and cerebral infarction from the involvement of the internal carotid artery (ICA). Thus, imaging plays a vital role in defining the presence and extent of disease.
