Abstract

Placental cord blood is a rich source of hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation. The number of cells contained in the cord blood unit, and degree of donor-recipient HLA compatibility have emerged as the major determinants of outcome in this setting. Investigators are now facing the challenge of developing strategies aimed at optimizing and accelerating engraftment to extend this form of transplantation to a larger number of patients in need.
