Abstract

A design is presented for high resolution, gamma camera style detectors suitable for use in a positron emission tomograph dedicated to small animal research. Through calculation and Monte Carlo simulation, the performance of the detector comprised of a LSO crystal coupled to a position sensitive photomultiplier tube (PS-PMT) is investigated. Based on the results, a PET system configuration (microPET) appropriate for high resolution functional imaging of small laboratory animals is proposed.
