Abstract

Effects of diazepam were studied on behavioral suppression produced in pigs by conditioned suppression of an operant response using either an electric shock or a food reward, or by conditioned suppression of a consummatory response using an unavoidable electric shock. Behavioral suppression was consistently obtained in both experimental situations using an unavoidable electric shock. However a reliable prereward suppression was evidenced only by a limited number of pigs, 3 out of 8. Diazepam released behavior which was suppressed by unavoidable electric shock, but the effects were less clear-cut and more variable than in the usual punishment discrimination operant procedure previously used. Diazepam had no consistent effect on behaviorally suppressed pigs in the positive conditioned suppression paradigm.
