Abstract

Corrigendum to: Effect of VIA Screening by Primary Health Workers: Randomized Controlled Study in Mumbai, India by Surendra S. Shastri, Indraneel Mittra, Gauravi A. Mishra, Subhadra Gupta, Rajesh Dikshit, Shalini Singh, and Rajendra A. Badwe. JNCI: J Natl Cancer Inst (2014); 106(3): dju009. These details have been corrected only in this corrigendum to preserve the published version of record. Some details regarding the method of cervical screening during the course of the study were not included in the original publication. The authors now wish to clarify the following: During cervical screening round #1: 6,335 participants were screened by visual inspection alone during the period of May 22, 1998 through December 24, 1998; 13,457 participants were screened by visual inspection with 2% acetic acid during the period December 25, 1998 through December 4, 1999; and thereafter all the remaining participants were screened by visual inspection with 4% acetic acid during screening round #1. During screening rounds #2, 3, and 4, all participants were screened by visual inspection with 4% acetic acid. It should be noted that the endpoint of the study was reduction in mortality due to screening. Mortality analysis was done on "intention to treat" basis, ie, irrespective of whether women received no screening, or 1, 2, 3, or 4 rounds of screening, or screening with only visual inspection, or screening with visual inspection with 2% or 4% acetic acid. Therefore, the above changes that were made in screening in a fraction of the women during the first round of screening will have had no bearing on the conclusions of the study.
