Abstract

A rapid increase in the senior population has spurred the growth of various long-term care facilities, from independent living facilities to assisted living facilities to continuing care retirement communities. The senior population represented in these facilities is heterogeneous and has not been studied extensively with regard to age-related disabilities. Gait disorders are common in older adults, although establishing their prevalence is hampered by the lack of a specific definition. The purpose of this study is to analyze the gait patterns and risk factors for falls in the population of an independent living senior apartment complex.
