Abstract
An evaluation is presented of genetic studies on cancer of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas and colon. Analysis of single gene mutations and etiologic mechanisms applies to gastrointestinal malignancies in general, because the assumption that all cancers of a specific anatomic site represent a homogeneous group in terms of etiology is questionable. Such an assumption in past studies has certainly made the importance of genetic factors in surveys or in individual families obscure. It has also probably made the identification of etiologic agents in large scale comparisons of populations obscure.
