Hereditary cancer syndromes in gynecologic oncology

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Approximately ten percent of ovarian and endometrial cancers are due to hereditary cancer syndromes. Genetic testing should first be performed on the person with cancer. Screening, chemoprevention and risk-reducing surgery are used in the management of people with hereditary cancer syndromes. Asking patients about their family history of cancer is a key component in identifying individuals at risk for hereditary cancer syndromes. Women at risk should be referred for counseling and testing, potentially preventing the development of new malignancies for the patient and cancer in their family members.
