Abstract

The history of the treatment of colorectal liver metastases reflects parallel breakthroughs in multiple disciplines including surgery, anatomy, radiology, and oncology. Advances in hemorrhage control, transection techniques, and understanding of segmental anatomy have led to lower rates of morbidity and mortality after resection of colorectal liver metastases. Multidisciplinary treatment has resulted in an increase in 5-year overall survival after resection of colorectal liver metastases from 25% in the 1980s to as high as 58% today.
