N2 - We report an intrinsic image distortion in microwave-induced thermoacoustic tomography. The distortion, due to microwave diffraction in the object to be imaged, leads to nonuniform excitation of acoustic pressure during microwave illumination. Both numerical simulations and phantom experiments demonstrate this phenomenon. A method of partial correction is also provided.
