Abstract

Sialadenitis is an inflammation of the salivary glands that is usually caused by a virus or bacteria and it can be subdivided into acute, subacute, or chronic forms. Acute bacterial suppurative parotitis can occur by several mechanisms, including ascending bacterial infection through the ductal system. Salivary stasis can permit retrograde seeding of Stensen’s duct by mixed oral flora. Viral infection and obstruction of the duct by calculi and tumor are additional pathogeneses.
