Abstract

Using a level dynamics approach, a one-parameter expression is derived for the number variance Σ(2)(s), which realizes a continuous interpolation between the Poisson and the circular unitary ensemble statistics. The leading term of its large s expansion is shown to be linearly dependent on s, in agreement with the semiclassical argument, and in contrast to the result by Kravtsov et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 72 (1994) 888] in mesoscopic physics. The influence of the conservation of the total level number on the large s behavior of the number variance is analyzed in detail.
