Abstract

The main goal after surgery for rectal cancer has been cure. However, as we have improved surgical techniques, quality of life has become an important secondary focus. After rectal resection (even for benign disease), bowel function can be severely impacted leading to a poor quality of life. This chapter focuses on the current thoughts regarding bowel function after a low anterior resection. The idea of low anterior resection syndreome (LARS) has been described for a decade, but standartization of the LARS definitoin has only been attempted more recently. In this chapter we will provide tips on treating patients with LARS. Additoinal concepts on efforts to improve quality of life for patients with LARS will also be explored.
