Abstract

The diagnostic approach to lymphoid neoplasia has been transformed in recent years as a result of seminal discoveries in the molecular biology of the immune system and in the field of oncogene research. Attendant technologic advances now enable the detection of clonal genetic recombination events, both physiologic and pathologic, with exquisite sensitivity and have implications for both diagnosis and monitoring of theraeputic response. This review highlights techniques with the broadest applicability in the diagnostic laboratory dealing with lympohoid neoplasia and discusses the potential, as well as the limitations, of these methodologies.
