Abstract

Human peripheral blood monocytes stimulated with LPS were found to release an activity that was cytotoxic for the A375 melanoma. Biochemical and immunological characterization of the activity indicated that IL 1-β was the cytotoxic agent. Human recombinant IL 1-β, purified to homogeneity, was directly cytotoxic for A375. Tumor necrosis factor, also released by activated monocytes, was not cytotoxic for the A375 melanoma.
