Abstract

Occupational lung disease (OLD) refers to a variety of disorders that affect the lungs following inhalation of dusts or chemical antigens in the work setting. OLD is an important public health issue and responsible for approximately 70% of all deaths from occupational diseases (Weston, IARC Sci Publ 163:387-405, 2011). Pneumoconioses comprise a subset of OLD that is defined as an interstitial lung disease caused by the inhalation of inorganic mineral dust. Other common work-related lung diseases include occupational asthma and hypersensitivity pneumonitis secondary to the exposure to dusts or antigens from a growing list of inciting agents.
