Abstract
In the field of oncology, there has been marked advancement in understanding cancer pathophysiology and therefore treatment. As a result, cancer patients had an increased survival, as well as quality of life. It is well-recognized that acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are associated with cancer treatments and as a result impact morbidity and mortality. From developing targeted therapies to immunotherapies, it has become evident that the associated kidney injuries are less recognized and understood. Therefore, onconephrology has been accepted in the last decade as an important field in nephrology and progressed from an American Society of Nephrology (ASN) forum to a formal fellowship to train future nephrologist on the challenges of renal diseases in the setting of a cancer patient.
