Abstract

To the Editor: It is of considerable interest that the most active group of researchers in the field of antibiotic prophylaxis against acquired respiratory infections have decided that “continuous use of polymixin B aerosol appears to be a dangerous form of therapy,” (Feeley TW, duMoulin GC, Hedley-Whyte J, et al: Aerosol polymixin and pneumonia. N Engl J Med 293:471–475, 1975). We are indebted to the Beth Israel group for their exhaustive study of polymixin B prophylaxis and the fine data that they have accumulated. Unfortunately, the conclusion that they have drawn is not supported by their study, and the statistics….
