Abstract

This study examined the psychometric, properties and the factor structure of the Spanish version of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (lnventario de Ansiedad Rasgo-Estado, IDARE: Spielberger & Diaz-Guerrero, 1975), on a sample of college students in Puerto Rico. Results suggest that the A-State and A-Trait scales of the IDARE are internally consistent. The mean T”-scores for the A-State and A-Trait scales for men and women in the sample corresponded to the mean expected value for normal populations, in terms of the factor structure of the IDARE, two- and three-factor solutions were meaningful and had good simple structure. Findings provide some support for the construct validity of the IDARE; however, they also suggest, that the state-trait dimensions may be multidimensional. Results of the factor analyses suggest that the anxiety-present-anxiety-absent dimensions may be more explanatory than the state-trait dimensions.
