Abstract

A registry is a research tool designed to longitudinally collect data for the prospective investigation of a predetermined research question. Registries are used in a variety of research fields, including clinical, quality, policy, or basic science, to study a specific disease or exposure, real-world treatment outcomes or adverse events, cost analyses, quality improvement, etc. The benefits of a registry include the flexibility of its design, which is tailored by the investigator and registry team to meet the specific objectives of the research question. After clearly defining the purpose and objectives of the registry in a study protocol, recruiting a multidisciplinary registry study team and establishing a detailed project management plan are critical steps in the development of a successful registry.
