Abstract

Respiratory failure after thyroid surgery is a devastating but rare entity. It is usually a sequel of a primary condition. As such, it is crucial for the surgeon to be familiar with this condition and its presentation. Early recognition of risk factors (e.g. neuromuscular co-morbidities) or primary complications (e.g. haematoma, recurrent laryngeal nerve injury) is a key factor in preventing this lethal complication. Treatment relies on early re-establishment of an airway.
