Abstract
Salmonella infections are generally self-limited and restricted to the gastrointestinal tract. In contrast, in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, there is a higher incidence of bacteremia caused by non-typhi Salmonella, as well as focal manifestations, although these ones still remain rare. In women with persistent abdominal pain or in those who present with pelvic inflammatory disease and history of Salmonella infection, ovarian abscess should be considered in the differential diagnosis. We present a case of Salmonella bacteremia and tubo-ovarian abscess in an HIV-infected woman. To our knowledge, this is the first case of non-typhi Salmonella ovarian abscesses in HIV-infected women reported in the literature.
