Abstract

A FEW FAST FACTS: Fecal occult blood testing remains a promising yet unproven method of screening for neoplasia. For average-risk men and women above 50 years of age, flexible sigmoidoscopy at 3- to 5-year intervals is recommended. Colonoscopic examination is recommended for patients with previously resected adenomas or carcinomas, patients with inflammatory bowel disease, patients with symptoms compatible with a diagnosis of colorectal cancer, and patients with first-degree relatives with colorectal cancer (especially if more than one relative is affected and age at onset was young).
