Abstract
The sex cords and stromal compartments collectively comprise the mesenchymal support structures and sites of hormone production for the female gonad and can give rise to a variety of rare ovarian malignancies. These tumors are often indolent yet can recur many years after initial diagnosis. Surgery in a key component in the treatment of sex cord/stromal ovarian tumors and is often used in conjunction with systemic chemotherapy or hormonal therapy for advanced or recurrent disease. The systematic exploration of the relationship between sex cord/stromal ovarian tumor molecular pathogenesis and optimal treatment strategies for these disease remains an active area of investigation.
