Abstract

It is well established that tobacco use is a leading cause of disease and death worldwide, and smoking is the primary risk factor for the development of lung cancer. This chapter is dedicated to tobacco use prevention and cessation, the two essential elements of successful tobacco control. Most recent developments in the tobacco control arena are discussed. Specifically, new and emerging forms of tobacco and recent developments on the tobacco market are presented. Factors explaining tobacco use initiation and elements of successful smoking prevention programs are outlined. Finally, tobacco addiction issues and the most recent recommendations on counseling and pharmacological treatment of tobacco dependence are described.
