Abstract
Despite advancements in the creation and care of stomas in the course of cancer treatment, stoma complications are common, and patients frequently seek evaluation in the ED. These issues can arise soon after the operative procedure or may develop at a much later date. Problems may range from benign skin irritation to a life-threatening obstruction causing bowel necrosis. A detailed history including cancer diagnosis and treatment combined with an astute physical exam will resolve most concerns. Laboratory evaluations and diagnostic imaging may be required in selected cases. As with most oncologic issues, a multidisciplinary approach ranging from surgical consultation to the expertise of an ostomy therapist may be needed to provide the best comprehensive management.
