Abstract

Synthetic corticosteroids are exogenous analogues of naturally occurring glucocorticoids and mineral corticoids produced by the adrenal glands. In particular, synthetic glucocorticoids serve an important role in anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive therapies. Indeed, they are widely used to treat inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, asthma, and eczema. Glucocorticoids are also used in neuro-oncology in the treatment of CNS lymphoma and leukemia, as well as treatment of tumor and radiation-associated edema. In addition, they are included as part of immunosuppressive regimes following organ transplant. Further discussion in this chapter is focused on the effects of glucocorticoids.
